Experience sustainability in urban spaces

In 2024, the KOPOS project, in cooperation with the Ecologic Institute, is launching the successful AgriKultur Festival concept in Berlin! The festival places sustainable agriculture and nutrition in a cultural context and offers a platform for information, learning, enjoyment, celebration, exchange and networking. It is based on its role model in Freiburg, which has already enjoyed great success.

The main aim of the festival is to promote exchange between town and country and to convey a deeper understanding of our food system.

Festival highlights:

Lectures and discussion panels: Experts from science and practice discuss current topics in agriculture and nutrition. The events offer in-depth insights and encourage critical reflection.
Authentic regional-ecological gastronomy: Visitors can sample regional and organically produced food and drink and learn more about sustainable eating habits.
Farmers' and information market: On September 21 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., initiatives and businesses will present their products and concepts. This is an ideal opportunity to talk directly to producers and find out more about how they work.
Do-it-yourself workshops: Participants can learn how to garden, cook or keep chickens in practical workshops. These workshops are designed to teach practical skills and raise awareness of sustainable practices.
Theater and films: Cultural performances and films on food policy issues provide an artistic perspective on agricultural challenges and solutions.
Artistic framework: Decorations, exhibitions and performances deal artistically with agricultural and food topics and create an inspiring ambience.
Children's program: A special program for children ensures that even the youngest are introduced to the topic of sustainability in a playful way.
Music, concerts, DJs: A varied music program rounds off the festival and invites you to celebrate and enjoy.

Securing agricultural land is a relevant challenge. The authors of the policy brief see a number of different approaches to safeguarding agricultural areas against other land use claims and are primarily addressing the state and municipal levels. The authors argue that the topics of agriculture, food, sustainability and rural development should be more closely integrated. They also recommend using spatial planning instruments to curb the current consumption of agricultural land and thus protect it from conversion.

For the project "New Cooperation for Sustainable Landuse and Food Supply in Urban-Rural Areas (KOPOS)", Ecologic Institute designed a ten-part postcard series. The postcard series promotes the first two episodes of the four-part KOPOS podcast series "Ernährungswende – Regional gedacht". In it, the focus of the two model projects (1) regional nutrition in Freiburg and (2) access to farmland in Brandenburg are discussed. The postcards are designed according to the project's style guidelines and also include a QR code to the corresponding podcast episode.

OftenSometimes there are insufficient resources to put the ideas developed into practice, to test them and to learn from the test run. The "KOPOS" project (New Cooperation for Sustainable Landuse and Food Supply in Urban-Rural Areas), funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung, BMBF) tackles this challenge and breaks new ground.
