Lago, Manuel and Youssef Zaiter 2023: Danish Pilot. M3.1 Business Brief of the Horizon 2020 project "Multi-use Offshore Platforms Demonstrators for Boosting Cost-effective and Eco-friendly Production in Sustainable Marine Activities" (UNITED).
A Danish pilot project successfully combines offshore wind energy production with innovative tourism activities. The project, developed in 2000 near the Middelgrunden island, combines the production of offshore wind energy with tourism activities, such as guided tours and educational programs on wind energy. It has become a commercially successful enterprise, supplying almost 3% of Copenhagen's electricity needs.
Legal and environmental factors: Challenges and opportunities
This business brief of the UNITED project examines the legal and environmental aspects of the project. The legal situation in Denmark does not include established procedures for multi-use permits, which requires different concessions and permits for different activities. The environmental impact has been assessed as minimal, and the offshore wind farm structures act as artificial reefs that positively impact fish populations.
Economic perspectives and SWOT analysis
The economic analysis of the project uses the Business Model Canvas method and a SWOT analysis to identify similarities and differences between the activities. Various synergies are highlighted that contribute to cost savings. Future challenges include political and legal uncertainties, as well as dependencies on weather conditions and boat providers.
