The fourth online Dialogue Forum "Private Households" took place on 1 December 2022. The event focused on the Citizen Science project "Deutschland rettet Lebensmittel!" ("Germany saves food") More than 70 participants from civil society, science, administration, and associations exchanged views with the Dialogue Forum team and three speakers from the field on actions carried out during the action week, (survey-)tools, and initial findings from the Citizen Science project during the three-and-a-half-hour event.
At the beginning of the event, Leonie Hasselberg (TU Berlin), as part of the project team of the Dialogue Forum "Private Households", gave an overview of the Citizen Science Project and presented the course of the project and the methodology of data collection. The Citizen Science Project "Deutschland rettet Lebensmittel!" ("Germany saves food!"), which was launched on 2 May 2022 on the Day of Food Waste, was accompanied by a nationwide action week of "Zu gut für die Tonne!" ("Too good for the bin!") from 29 September to 6 October 2022, during which participants could take part in one or more actions. The project ran until 23 October 2022 and will be evaluated by the project team.
Accompanied by the exchange in the large plenary, three speakers gave insights into their experiences with different action formats: Sonja Pannenbecker from the Verbraucherzentrale Bremen e.V. reported on diverse actions: from action bounds to seven presentations of the Verbraucherzentralen, to distribution campaigns of 'kitchen-helpers'. Luisa Greupner from Zu gut für die Tonne! presented three measures, including the ZgfdT! box, which provided the recipients with a selection of helpful tools and tricks around the topic of purchasing and planning. In her keynote speech, Sandra Seiwert from the Verbraucherzentrale Saarland took a look at networking and cooperation as key factors and presented various practical examples such as a school workshop.
Presented by Prof. Dr. Nina Langen (TU Berlin), the project team gave an overview of the preliminary results of the Citizen Science project, based on the data sets of 214 participants who have completed all phases of data collection. A comprehensive analysis of the data will take place next spring. The detailed analyses will be published in summer 2023 and can then be found on the ZgfdT! website.
The preliminary evaluation of the kitchen diary has shown that there was a significant reduction in food waste among the participants: After the action week, 16% less food was thrown away than before. This is about 22g per person per day and about 8 kg per year per person, which can thus be saved.
The agenda and documentation of the event are available for download, and the slides of the presentation are linked in the text.
