This paper formulates recommendations for action for policy makers to promote sustainable food systems in Germany and identifies open research needs. Stephanie Wunder and Dr. Martin Hirschnitz-Garbers of Ecologic Institute contributed to this. The results paper is available for download.

In the following four fields of action, ideas were developed for political approaches to the design and implementation of sustainable food systems:

Creation of appropriate political and financial framework conditions for sustainable agri-food systems
Cooperation of all stakeholders for holistic strategy development
Strengthening competencies
Establish assessment models for sustainable agricultural and food systems

Priority research needs were identified in five areas:

Further development, harmonisation of data evaluation and practice-oriented processing of measuring instruments.
Continuous evaluation of policy objectives, for example in the field of sustainable procurement.
Analysis of barriers and conditions for the success of sustainable food systems.
The inclusion of practitioners from all parts of the value chain. Analysis of the communication and cooperation processes between the various actors.
Further development of suitable teaching methods for sustainability competencies in order to integrate research results and instruments into the working methods, (communication) structures and routines of the relevant stakeholders.

The synthesis paper was developed in cooperation with six research projects that were part of the BMBF funding measure "Sustainable Management" (NaWi) launched in 2014 and worked on various aspects of sustainable nutrition and sustainable food systems.

If science provides the right impulses, completely new ideas can emerge in practice. The last episode of the environmental podcast "Knowledge for Future" dealt with the importance of transdisciplinary research, in particular with the synergies and challenges that can arise when research and companies work together. This episode focuses on two concrete examples of such synergetic cooperations: sustainability within the food and fashion industry.

What can consumers, citizens, companies and local decision-makers do to make our economies more sustainable? 30 research projects were funded by the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF) to research this and other aspects of a transition to a more sustainable economy. Practical ideas from these projects on how to act more sustainably are now available through an interactive website, produced by Ecologic Institute.

On 17 June 2019, the NaWiKo workshop "Sustainable management in companies based on the example of bioplastics" took place at the facilities of Bio-Molkerei Söbbeke GmbH, a sustainable creamery, in Gronau near Münster. The aim of the workshop was for company representatives from the packaging and food industry to discuss findings from research projects that dealt with sustainability effects of bioplastics and bio-based materials.

On 26 June 2019, the NaWiKo workshop "Sustainable management in companies through employee integration in corporate sustainability innovations" took place in the facilities of the KUKA Gmbh in Siegen. The aim of the workshop was to discuss findings from research projects dealing with the relevance of the involvement of employees and users in corporate sustainability innovations with company representatives from the manufacturing industry. The goal of the exchange was to discuss the role and the challenges regarding Open Innovation (meaning the involvement of employees and users) for corporate sustainability innovations in terms of whether and under what conditions research findings can be relevant for and applicable to everyday business life.

This also applies to the sustainable economy issue: There are particularly committed people behind many smaller and larger developments that have been set in motion in recent years. Some of these "change agents" who were involved in projects of the "Scientific coordination of research projects on a sustainable economy" (NaWiKo) have been presented as part of the project's dissemination work.
