International experts on geoengineering met at the workshop "International governance of geoengineering," organized by Ecologic Institute and the German Federal Environment Agency (Umweltbundesamt) from 5 to 6 November 2012 in Berlin.

The workshop is part of the research project Approaches to regulating the research and deployment of geoengineering  for the German Federal Environment Agency, in which Ecologic Institute develops objectives and specific options for international governance structures for geoengineering. The project’s focus is on policy recommendations that can be implemented in practice.

Ecologic Institute brought together legal and governance experts from the research community and government who discussed the current state of play and objectives and points to consider for geoengineering governance. Against this background participants considered governance options from institutional and normative perspectives as well as how to address science and research. The thoughts and views discussed at the workshop will feed into the further work in the project.
