Ecologic Institute 2024: Modell der wichtigsten hydrologischen Parameter des Wasserrückhalts. In: Stein, U., Schritt, H., Uschan, T., & Reineke, J. (2024). Maßnahmen zur Erhöhung des Wasserrückhalts in der Landschaft. Wasserwirtschaft, 5, 36-41. http://doi.org/10.1007/s35147-024-2335-7

The infographic illustrates the key hydrological parameters that influence the water balance in ecosystems. The water cycle is illustrated, starting with precipitation through various phases such as evaporation, transpiration, surface runoff, seepage water movements and the recharge of groundwater. These processes are fundamental to understanding water cycles and their significance for the environment and climate. The visualization makes it clear how precipitation is filtered through the different earth layers and ultimately contributes to the replenishment of groundwater.

Visual overview of hydrological processes

The design of the infographic is characterized by a clear and intuitive layout to present the complex processes of the water balance in an easy-to-understand way. The use of smooth color transitions and clear lines highlights the different water movements and their interactions. The different hydrological phases are symbolized by different colors, with blue tones dominating to illustrate the flow of water. The round, holistic shape of the graphic supports the concept of a closed water cycle and promotes an understanding of the cyclical nature of these processes. The clear structure and intuitive visual presentation effectively communicates essential concepts of hydrology.

Research and visualization in the WADKlim project: Hydrological parameters and strategies against water scarcity

In the WADKlim project, Ecologic Institute is analyzing the effects of drought and aridity on water supply, soil water balance and groundwater availability in Germany and developing solution strategies for emerging conflicts of use. The infographic “Model of the most important hydrological parameters of water retention” was developed by Ecologic Institute for the WadKlim publication "Measures to increase water retention in the landscape", which appeared in the journal Wasserwirtschaft in May 2024.

Understanding hydrological processes is essential for the management and protection of our water resources, especially in the context of climate change.
