1. Ecologic Institute Named Top Environmental Policy Think Tank in World-wide Ranking – News

   Ecologic Institute has been ranked first place worldwide among Environment Policy Think Tanks in the University of Pennsylvania's 2020 Global Think Tank Ranking Index. This significant honor marks the 11th consecutive year under the top 10 in this category and the first time atop the podium. Ecologic Institute also achieved first place among "Think Tanks with the Best Quality Assurance and Integrity Policies and Procedures", after placing in the top 10 for the past five consecutive years in this category.

2. The STEER Diagnostic Water Governance Tool – Publication

   Ecologic Institute has recently launched the Diagnostic Water Governance Tool, which is aimed at both water governance practitioners and researchers around the world. The tool provides a diagnosis of case-specific water governance as well as recommendations for appropriate instruments, with a focus on coordination and cooperation improvement. The case-specific suggestions for appropriate instruments are based on an algorithm that is grounded in the empirical findings of the STEER research project. This is a unique and innovative feature of the Diagnostic Water Governance Tool, which sets it apart from existing online tools for water governance and management. The Tool has been developed as part of the STEER project under the GRoW (Globale Ressource Wasser) program, founded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF, Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung).

3. Towards an International Research Consortium on Soil Organic Carbon – CIRCASA Final Event

   The final online event of the CIRCASA project brought together over 230 participants from across the globe to explore the strategic research agenda and take steps towards an international research consortium on soil organic carbon. The research consortium's aim is to strengthen collaboration among researchers and stakeholders in order to better support the scaling up of beneficial soil management for maintaining and enhancing soil carbon stocks. The effort builds on CIRCASA's three-year work of reviewing the state-of-the-art on research and gathering stakeholders' views on barriers, solutions and knowledge gaps. 4. Administrative and Practical Implementation of Watercourse Development Measures – Online Workshop

   The fourth workshop of a series on hydromorphology took place as an online workshop on 26 and 27 January 2021. It brought together stakeholders from water management administrations, nature and environmental protection associations, scientists, engineering companies and experts to exchange information and experiences and to identify and reflect on challenges of the implementation processes of river restoration. The event was hosted by the German Federal Environment Agency and organized by Ecologic Institute in cooperation with Planungsbüro Zumbroich. 5. Combined Effects of Human Pressures on Europe's Marine Ecosystem – Publication

   A team of experts from the European Topic Centre on Inland, Coastal and Marine Waters (ETC-ICM) including Ecologic Institute's Dr. Ulf Stein published a study on the "Combined effects of human pressures on Europe's marine ecosystem". The paper was issued by the Journal for environment and society "Ambio". The central objective is to assess the extent to which human activities exert pressures on marine environments and where these pressures lead to degradation of the ecosystem.

6. The Climate Crisis in Times Marked by the Global Pandemic – Presentation

   To provide the G20 leaders with scientific advice, Think20 – a group of think tanks and academia from G20 countries – will work on policy papers and recommendations over the upcoming months. At the T20 Inception Conference, thought leaders and policy makers like Paolo Gentiloni (European Commissioner for Economy), Jeffrey Sachs (Director of the Center for Sustainable Development at Columbia University), and Fatih Birol (Executive Director, International Energy Agency- IEA) came together to highlight and discuss pressing issues for 2021. Dr. Camilla Bausch (Ecologic Institute) spoke on the impacts of the pandemic on pathways towards a climate-friendly future, as well as on multilateral opportunities in 2021. 7. How Think Tanks Can Serve as a Catalyst for Action – Presentation

   How can think tanks serve as a catalyst for ideas and action? In view of a challenging year of dual public health and environmental crises, Dr. Camilla Bausch addressed this question at the Why Think Tanks Matter Forum. The forum brought together more than 700 think tank professionals from all around the world. In an all-female panel, leading think tank presidents from four continents elaborated on how think tanks can add insights and value on key policy issues for policymakers and the public.

8. COACCH – 3rd Interactive Co-Design Workshop

   COACCH has designed a series of interactive workshops to co-design the project's direction, activities and outputs. The third interactive COACCH workshop was held on 3 and 4 December 2020 in a virtual format. More than 40 participants from nine European countries joined the workshop, representing all four COACCH working groups: policy makers, investors, business and industry, research and civil society.
