1. Ecologic Institute at the International Climate Summit COP19 in Warsaw - News

   The 19th Conference of the Parties (COP 19) to United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) will be held in Warsaw (Poland) through 22 November 2013. Ecologic Institute is supporting the negotiations via its legal expertise and is also presenting the results of its research projects during various sessions of the event. In addition, a transatlantic expert group attended the conference and was guided through the negotiations by Ecologic Institute staff. 2. Improving Drought Governance in European Regions - News

   Between September and November 2013, researchers from Ecologic Institute were part of a team that visited five areas of Northwestern Europe to assess regional drought governance frameworks in the field. The team, in which Ecologic Institute was joined by four other research institutes, used a Governance Assessment Tool specifically developed for researching drought in its stakeholder interviews. This tool is available for download.

3. Cutting-Edge Research Project RADOST Presents Results - News

   The German newspaper "Die Zeit" recently reported on the "Regional Adaptation Strategies for the German Baltic Sea Coast" (RADOST) project and its cutting-edge research, led by Ecologic Institute. Results from five years of research funded by the "Managing climate change in the regions for the future" (Klimzug) initiative will be presented in Berlin on 26 and 27 November 2013 and in Rostock in April 2014. Further results will be published in a series through the oekom publishing house.

4. Arctic Marine Governance: Opportunities for Transatlantic Cooperation - Publication

   The Arctic region not only plays an important role in regulating the world's climate, but is also highly affected by climate change. A new book edited by Ecologic Institute's Elizabeth Tedsen, Sandra Cavalieri, and R. Andreas Kraemer addresses the significant changes and developments the Arctic has undergone in the recent years. "Arctic Marine Governance: Opportunities for Transatlantic Cooperation" looks at the current governance environment in the marine Arctic, considers how policy frameworks can adapt to address new challenges in the region, and examines opportunities for cooperation between the European Union and the United States.

5. Canada's Arctic Council Chairmanship - Moderation

   On 5 November 2013, Ecologic Institute and the Embassy of Canada in Berlin hosted a presentation by Jeannette Menzies, head of the Canadian International Centre for the Arctic Region (CICAR), on the topic of "Canada's Arctic Council Chairmanship". Jeannette Menzies elaborated on Canadian priorities and key initiatives for the next two years in this important regional forum. Arne Riedel, Researcher at Ecologic Institute, moderated the ensuing discussion with an expert audience – including fellows of the Arctic Summer College, via live video stream – covering a number of areas. In addition to questions regarding the Arctic Council, the included other issues, such as support for and exchange in science and research, as well as the inclusion of the private sector in the economic development of the region.

6. Losing Ground? - Global Soil Week 2013

   What is the status of soil loss and land degradation globally – are we in fact “Losing Ground?” This was the theme of Global Soil Week 2013, held in Berlin from 27 to 31 October. The conference brought together a wide array of international stakeholders from academia, civil society, business, and policy to discuss three major thematic areas within the "nexus" (the interconnected relationship between water, energy, and food security). The thematic areas explored were: Understanding soils in the nexus, Managing the nexus, and Creating sustainable pathways to societal change. Ecologic Institute hosted two dialogue sessions and contributed to a workshop during this conference.

7. Energiewende Act for Berlin - Moderation

   On 22 October 2013, Dr. Stephan Sina, Senior Fellow at Ecologic Institute, moderated a discussion in Berlin City Hall on the planned Energiewende Act for Berlin, with about 90 representatives taking part from business, policy, and administration. 8. Climate and Clean Air Coalition - Addressing Climate Change and Municipal Solid Waste - Event

   The meeting of the Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC) Municipal Solid Waste Initiative, from 10 to 11 October 2013 in Vienna, brought together participating cities and initiative partners to strengthen international action to reduce emissions of short-lived climate pollutants (SLCPs) from municipal solid waste. The CCAC Initiative fosters peer-to-peer knowledge exchanges, provides training opportunities, and continues to build a supportive global network of cities taking action on SLCPs. The major objective for this meeting was developing plans for direct and on-the-ground action that the CCAC and new participating cities can carry out jointly through 2014.

9. Transatlantic Cooperation on Energy Security and Climate - 1st ELEEP Conference

   The Emerging Leaders in Environmental and Energy Policy Network (ELEEP), an initiative of Ecologic Institute and the Atlantic Council, hosted the Transatlantic Cooperation on Energy Security and Climate Change Conference on 3 October 2013 at the Atlantic Council's headquarters in Washington, DC. Over 130 people, including 31 ELEEP Members, were welcomed by Damon Wilson, ACUS's Executive Vice President, and Michael Mehling, President of Ecologic Institute US. The conference's sessions featured high-level energy and climate representatives from Britain, the Czech Republic, and the European Union, senior officials from three US presidential administrations, nonprofit experts, and journalists.

10. Made for Each Other? Environmental Policy Research and the State - Event

    The topic of the fourth installment of the series "From the blue sky over the Ruhr to the Energiewende" was the relationship between the state and environmental policy research. Prof. Dr. Rolf Kreibich and Dr. Hendrik Vygen were invited to present their views on the topic. While Prof. Dr. Kreibich, being the former scientific director and chief executive of the Institute for Future Studies and Technology Assessment (ITZ) for 21 years, represented the environmental policy research side, Dr. Vygen could offer valuable comparisons between the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU) and the Federal Ministry of the Interior (BMI) from his experience as a division head in both ministries.
