Gerstetter, Christiane and Eleftheria Kampa 2011: Policy-making in the face of climate change, water conflicts and human security - CLICO Policy Brief No. 2. Berlin: Ecologic Institute.

Together with more than 10 partners from the EU and the Middle East, Ecologic Institute is carrying out the EU-funded research project on "Climate change, hydro-conflicts and human security" (CLICO). CLICO investigates how climate change influences water availability and, consequently, human security and conflicts in the Mediterranean region. The 2nd CLICO policy brief, written by Ecologic Institute, is available for download.

The brief presents insights on emerging policies at the interface of climate change, water and human security at the national and international levels. Ten case studies conducted in various Mediterranean countries and at the UN and EU levels investigated whether the link between climate change and human security/conflict is being addressed through targeted policies. The studies show that so far there are few specific policies addressing this interface. However, policies such as a Turkish agricultural insurance scheme or the creation of water user associations in Egypt show that even policies which are not explicitly aimed at preventing conflicts or risks to human security may have beneficial impacts to this end.

The 2nd CLICO policy brief [pdf, 208 KB, English] is available for download.
