Berlin, Germany

The BMUV recently hosted a stakeholder dialogue to explore and develop digital solutions that support sustainable and circular consumption decisions in everyday life. The kick-off event took place in Berlin on 13 November 2024, bringing together experts from research and practice.

Background

Digital technologies hold great potential for promoting sustainable consumption decisions, closing material cycles, reducing CO₂ emissions, and increasing resource efficiency. However, much remains to be done to unlock their full potential.

As part of the BMUV project "Designing and planning digital solutions to promote sustainable consumption for a circular economy", the event marked the beginning of a collaborative process to discuss innovative ideas and advance their practical implementation. The project aims to help consumers integrate sustainable and circular criteria into their everyday decisions and extend the lifespan of products.

Highlights from the Event

During the event, participants shared insights on existing digital approaches, such as repair platforms and sharing initiatives, which had been analyzed as part of the project. The discussions focused on identifying the most promising concepts for further development and addressing potential hurdles early on. Key questions included:

  • Which approaches hold the greatest potential for scaling and further implementation?
  • What are the strengths and weaknesses of the solutions presented?
  • Are there additional solutions that should be considered?

Next Steps

Following the event, online focus groups will continue the dialogue, enabling participants to deepen their contributions and strengthen connections with other stakeholders from science, civil society, industry, and politics. These activities aim to directly influence the development of digital solutions and contribute to the future of sustainable and circular consumption.

The BMUV is grateful to all participants for their valuable input and is looking forward to continued collaboration as the project progresses.
