Communication Concept Implementation of Peatland Protection in Brandenburg

Project
Duration
-

Peatland protection and rewetting play a crucial role in climate protection in Brandenburg, as emissions from Brandenburg's drained peatlands need to be reduced. In March 2023, the Brandenburg cabinet adopted a peatland protection program. This program builds on the National Peatland Protection Strategy as well as on the initiative "Climate Protection through Peatland Protection", a 2021 agreement between the German government and the federal states.

Implementing peatland climate protection, especially on agriculturally used land, is a long-term, profound transformation process that requires intensive communication among all parties involved. This project aims to develop recommendations for communication on peatland protection in Brandenburg.

In a first project step, the current communication landscape on the topic of peatland protection in Brandenburg and other peat-rich federal states is examined. This includes brief media resonance analyses and communication analyses of relevant stakeholders. Conclusions and recommendations for Brandenburg are derived from these analyses.

The project is being led by Ecologic Institute and was commissioned by the Ministry of Agriculture, Environment, and Climate Protection (MLUK) of Brandenburg. The Brandenburg section of the German Association for Landcare (DVL) is involved in an advisory capacity on regional and technical issues.
