Lecture

At the invitation of the Italian Institute for International Political Studies (ISPI), Dr. Camilla Bausch held a "Lectio Magistralis". At this Lectio, leading experts such as Jean-Claude Trichet (Former President of the European Central Bank) and Sergei Guriev (Professor of Economics at Sciences Po in Paris) discuss key political and scientific insights with master's students of the ISPI School. Dr. Bausch's lecture focused on dynamics, setbacks and breakthroughs in international climate policy – including an outlook on 2023 and identifying opportunities for the students themselves to take action.

"Don't forget to act yourself" – this was the final message in Dr. Camilla Bausch's Lectio Magistralis, held on 3 February 2023, at the invitation of the Italian Institute for International Political Studies (ISPI). She spoke to the students of the ISPI School's Master in Diplomacy and the Master in International Cooperation programs.

In her Lectio on "Climate protection as a global policy challenge", Dr. Bausch built on her own experience in international negotiations and wove it together with scientific findings on the effects of climate change, an analysis of the developments in international climate policy over the last few decades, and an outlook on 2023. She pointed to contrasting trends: on the one hand, the alarming status quo marked by troubling emission trends and geopolitical tensions, and on the other hand, the positive momentum marked by climate neutrality pledges, new models of international cooperation and plummeting cost of renewable energy technologies.

The full Lectio Magistralis is available here.

The lecture was part of the ISPI School Visiting Faculty Programme 2022/2023. This program features experts such as Jean-Claude Trichet (Former President of the European Central Bank), Staffan de Mistura (UN Secretary-General's Personal Envoy on Western Sahara), Sergei Guriev (Professor of Economics at Sciences Po in Paris), or Maha Yahya (Director of the Malcolm H. Kerr Carnegie Middle East Center).

International climate policy is marked by conflicting trends. Policymakers and societies must embrace the opportunities to deliver rigorous action on the ground.
