Global climate action is not moving fast enough – This is confirmed by the result of the latest review on the progress of implementing the Paris Agreement. Close international cooperation and aligning existing climate policy frameworks could foster reducing emissions much faster in the short run. The Ecologic Institute investigates which structures of multilateral cooperation linked to climate action already exist – and furthermore, develops ideas on how to go beyond existing structures to increase global climate action.

Aim and content of the project

The project analyses existing measures and instruments of international climate policy that facilitate and accelerated global climate action till 2030. The project results aims to inform climate policy and diplomacy processes particularly between G20 states. Among others, this is supported by publishing policy paper, such as the recently published background paper on "Key mitigation options to close the global 2030 ambition and action gap".

The project sets a focuses on G20 states within the following selected policy areas:

1. Coal phase-out/transformation of the energy industry, in particular increase of renewable energies and energy efficiency,
2. Production, trade and use of synthetic fuels (from renewable energies),
3. Reduction of post-harvest losses, food waste and animal products, and
4. Forest protection and reforestation.

The project team develops discussion papers on the selected policy areas to open the door to a lively exchange with experts from science and politics. Moreover, the project looks beyond the selected policy areas and analyzes the preconditions and barriers for climate action. Therefore, links (synergies as well as conflicts) between possible initiatives are identified that are rooted in different policy areas and are promising to facilitate climate action. Beyond the publications, the results will be published and presented to a wider expert audience at the end of the project.

Project partners and role of Ecologic Institute

The project, funded by the German Federal Environment Agency, is coordinated by Ecologic Institute and implemented in cooperation with the Öko Institut and Climate Analytics. Beyond the project coordination, Ecologic Institute is responsible for preparing policy papers on energy transformation and food, organizing expert discussions on various topics - and providing the final report including the analysis of synergies and conflicts.
