In this webinar session, the International Carbon Action Partnership (ICAP) presented its latest report "Offset Use Across Emissions Trading Systems", followed by a discussion with an expert panel drawn from policy making, offset project origination, and an offset crediting standard. Questions discussed included the role that offsets can play in carbon pricing instruments, the benefits and risks of their use, policy solutions to maintain the integrity of the emissions trading system, and implications of offset use for the market for emission allowances.
Despite limitations in the legal detail, the Paris Agreement's political narrative goes way beyond its legal text. The approach is an experiment that relies on the national determination of efforts combined with the persuasive impact of the transparency framework and the regular taking stock of progress. The future details to these elements could be crucial for safeguarding ambition.
This chapter first analyses the legal structure of the overall Paris Outcome in terms of the legal status of the different texts, how they are linked, and how they together form the new climate regime. The chapter then looks at the structure of the Paris Agreement's content, i.e. how its individual provisions work together. Finally, it provides a bird's eye view of the legal nature of individual sections and provisions, and concludes with some further insights.
In this article Ralph Bodle and Vicky Noens outline some of the many finance issues to be addressed COP 24 and look more in-depth at two particular issues: the overarching goal regarding finance flows in Article 2(1)(c); and

This infographic provides an overview of the Measures for fish protection and downstream fish migration in Europe. The infographic is part of a fact sheet on fish protection targets in Europe.
This policy brief explores the potential and benefits of marine restoration, as proposed in the regulation. Marine and coastal ecosystems are immensely important for biodiversity and human well-being. Restoring marine areas can enable the respective ecosystems to (once again) perform their natural functions, improving their overall health and resilience.
This document summarises the results and discussion of the international online expert workshop "Fostering applied research on the synergies between biodiversity and climate".
To support the development and application of emissions trading systems in the region, from 27 February to 3 March 2023, the International Carbon Action Partnership (ICAP) will convene an online Seminar, focusing on Latin America and the Caribbean. As an entry-level training, the one-week Seminar will introduce participants to the basic concepts and key elements of emissions trading.
IEEP and the Ecologic Institute, as part of the Think Sustainable Europe network, have prepared a series of thematic policy briefs to inform policymakers of some of the key benefits of nature restoration.
The Commission's proposal to certify carbon removals is a climate policy milestone, but it steers EU climate policy towards dangerous shoals. Nils Meyer-Ohlendorf – together with Anne Siemons and Hannes Böttcher from Öko-Institut – discusses how to circumnavigate them in the Tagesspiegel.
The project "Climate Adaptation Naturally Nature-based Solutions for Municipalities" aims to communicate the potential of nature-based solutions for climate adaptation in cities and municipalities in a targeted manner and to support cities and municipalities in the implementation of such solutions with the help of practice-oriented applications. The project primarily addresses climate adaptation managers in the municipalities, but also representatives from urban planning and development, green space offices and nature conservation authorities, education and culture, water and wastewater management.
This infographic provides an overview of the prevalence of strategic concepts for hydropower utilisation and general methods or recommendations for ensuring downstream continuity in Europe. The infographic is part of a fact sheet on fish protection targets in Europe.
This infographic summarizes the information on build-out flow and bypass flow at sites entered in the Atlas Fish Protection & Downstream Fish. The proportionate flow rate corresponds to the percentage of the bypass flow rate in relation to the development flow rate. The infographic is part of a fact sheet on fish protection and downstream fish migration measures.
This infographic evaluates the information on the aspects of the monitoring studies (multiple answers possible) at the sites entered in the
Atlas of Fish Protection & Downstream Fishways. The infographic is part of a fact sheet on fish protection and downstream fish migration measures.
This infographic summarizes the data on the monitoring studies, differentiated by screen bar spacing and build-out flow rate at the sites entered in the Atlas Fish Protection & Downstream Fish up to a build-out flow rate of 200 m³/s. The infographic is part of a fact sheet on fish protection and downstream fish migration measures.
