Sandra Cavalieri, Fellow and Arctic Programme Coordinator at Ecologic Institute, presented the results of the EU Arctic Footprint and Policy Assessment project at a conference hosted by the European Space Agency (ESA) on 8 December 2010 in Paris, France. The results show Europe’s Arctic environmental footprint from a broad range of sources, and added to the discussion on how ESA can improve its satellites and remote sensing data to contribute to the EU’s Arctic policy development. The European Space Agency and the Institute for Environmental Security organized the "Europe’s Arctic Course" expert workshop on the future of space cooperation in the Arctic region. Sandra Cavalieri was invited to present the results of the EU Arctic Footprint and Policy Assessment project as part of the multi-disciplinary session on understanding the role of governance with respect to the environment and impacts of climate change in the Arctic. Workshop participants concluded that an increased space presence in the Arctic is needed to monitor impacts of climate change as well as to improve safety and communication. Since Europe and the Arctic are strongly interlinked, participants agreed that the EU should play a strong role in international efforts to monitor the Arctic, especially through the European Space Agency.
