Integrating Hydrogen Emissions into the EU Policy Framework – Report
While hydrogen (H2) emissions make up a negligible fraction of today's GHG emissions, they are set to become more significant in the 2030s and 2040s. As decisions made today will shape hydrogen value chains for decades, this paper develops a series of policy proposals for the implementation of a four-pronged strategy to prevent and mitigate H2 emissions.
Scaling up Carbon Dioxide Removals – Opportunities and risks in the EU – Report
This report, published by the European Scientific Advisory Board on Climate Change (ESABCC), analyses options for scaling up carbon dioxide removals (CDR) in the EU, taking into account the respective costs, risks and opportunities. The report includes recommendations on emission reductions, MRV systems, sustainable biomass utilization and innovation. Ecologic Institute supported the preparation of this report by analyzing the mechanisms for addressing non-permanence, additionality and liability and by collecting data on existing regulatory requirements for CDR.
Sustainable Urban Development in the European Arctic – Book
The recently published open access book Sustainable Urban Development in the European Arctic, co-authored by Arne Riedel, explores sustainable urban development in seven cities in the European Arctic. It examines how Arctic cities can align with the global sustainability goals set by the 2030 Agenda and the Paris Agreement on Climate Change. The book is now available for free download!
Overcoming Barriers to Pondscape Nature-based Solutions – Report
This report provides a final overview of PONDERFUL's examination of the social, political, economic and financial barriers to implementing ponds as nature-based solutions. Based on the findings, the report concludes with key lessons learned. The report also covers methodological reflections, including a critical appraisal and recommendations for stakeholder engagement in large-scale, international research projects.
Options for Standards to Ensure Environmental Integrity and Uptake – Report
Carbon farming does not only contribute to climate change mitigation but can also have other sustainability impacts. This report draws on seven focus group meetings between scientists, farm associations, voluntary carbon market representatives and policy makers. It makes recommendations on how the certification of carbon farming can positively impact biodiversity, adaptation, water and other sustainability outcomes, with specific consideration of the EU's 2024 Carbon Removals and Carbon Farming certification framework and a focus on carbon farming on mineral soils.
The Future Task of a Near-Natural Landscape Water Balance – Result Documentation
An intact, near-natural landscape water balance is particularly important for the protection of nature, climate and resources as well as for the adaptation to climate change. However, the water balance is currently heavily influenced by anthropogenic factors. On 18 April 2024, Ecologic Institute organized a symposium for the German Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (BfN) under the title 'The Future Task of a Near-natural Landscape Water Balance'. The presentations and discussions focused on different aspects of the restoration of near-natural landscape water balance. This documentation of the results summarizes the most important findings of the symposium and presents the research and implementation needs that were identified.
Scaling Up Innovations in the Bioeconomy – Conference
At the Bio360 Expo 2025 in Nantes, the SCALE-UP project consortium presented new bio-based solutions for Europe's green transformation. As coordinator of the SCALE-UP project, Ecologic Institute played a key role in connecting innovators, investors as well as researchers, and promoting sustainable bio-based solutions. Gerardo Anzaldúa, Senior Fellow at Ecologic Institute, moderated a session on scaling up innovation in the bioeconomy and participated in a panel discussion on challenges and success factors in the development of sustainable products.
Tools and Indicators for Coastal Wetland Restoration – Workshop
On 19 February 2025, Ecologic Institute hosted an online workshop as part of the RESTORE4Cs project, focusing on coastal wetland restoration to promote climate resilience in Europe. Experts discussed EU policy objectives, monitoring methods and indicators to measure progress. Important topics were the EU regulation on nature restoration, innovative research impulses for wetland indicators and financing approaches for nature-based solutions. The presentation slides of the experts are available for download.
Scoping Workshop on Ecosystem-based Adaptation in Coastal Regions – TROPICAL ADAPT Workshop
On 20 February 2025, Ecologic Institute hosted a virtual scoping workshop as part of the TROPICAL ADAPT project. The goal was to discuss the challenges and opportunities of Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA) in tropical and subtropical coastal regions with international experts. Interactive sessions encouraged exchange on governance, monitoring, and the role of the private sector. The results will serve as a foundation for upcoming workshops and policy briefs. Presentations on coral reef protection, mangrove restoration, and financing strategies are available for download.
Building a Lasting Legacy: CITIES TALK NATURE – Webinar
As the INTERLACE project concludes, we invite you to a final CITIES TALK NATURE webinar on 27 February 2025 to reflect on the project's impact and to ensure a continued legacy. This session will showcase key resources and empower cities, local stakeholders, and the research community to continue to drive the long-term adoption of nature-based solutions (NbS).
