On Tuesday, November 26, 2024, the webinar "Advancing Natural Climate Adaptation: Financing Options for Nature-Based Solutions in Municipalities" took place. The event provided municipalities with practical insights and information on innovative approaches to finance nature-based solutions.
The webinar began with a warm welcome from Dr. Andreas Huck of the German Environment Agency, who emphasized the importance of nature-based climate adaptation for municipalities. Benedict Bueb from the Ecologic Institute followed with an introduction to the project.
Dr. Henrik Scheller from the German Institute for Urban Affairs discussed the fiscal frameworks for municipal financing, highlighting opportunities and limitations of “innovative” financing approaches to mobilize additional resources. Building on this, Jenny Tröltzsch from the Ecologic Institute provided a comprehensive overview of innovative financing options for nature-based solutions and their potential benefits.
Practical examples were presented in two inspiring case studies. Andrea Berger-Schulze from the City of Munich shared insights into the implementation of the Munich Green Bond 2024 and its role in funding sustainable projects, including green roofs. Following this, Dr.-Ing. Bodo Weigert from the Berlin Water Utilities introduced the tiered fee system for rainwater in Berlin, which incentivizes businesses and private actors to implement rainwater management measures on their properties.
The webinar provided valuable insights and practical strategies to address financial challenges in implementing nature-based solutions.
The event was organized as part of the ReFoPlan project "Naturally Climate Adaptation! Resilient Nature-Based Solutions for Municipalities." The project is being carried out by Ecologic Institute on behalf of the German Federal Environment Agency.
