Mountain Sustainability: Transforming Research into Practice (mountain.TRIP)
Global change holds many risks for European mountain regions. Melting glaciers, changes in permafrost and vegetation, as well as political, economic and cultural globalization present dangers for mountain populations. Numerous research projects produced valuable findings to ensure sustainable development in mountain regions. Mountain.TRIP starts where these projects have stopped, translating research findings into useful information for practitioners. Read more ...
Research Group on Ecosystem Services established
Funded by the German Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) under the research programme on Social-ecological Research (SÖF), an interdisciplinary research group has been established aiming to improve the understanding of the relationship between market-based instruments (MBIs), ecosystem services, and the quality of life in Central European cultural landscapes. BMBF-funding was granted over a period of four years and amounts to 1.76 million Euros. Evaluation of soil protection measures (EUSOIL)
In order to meet the goals of the EU Thematic Strategy for Soil Protection, soil protection will need to be further integrated in other policy areas. For this reason, an analysis of the measures adopted by the Member States in plans and programs pursuant to certain pieces of Community and international legislation is required. The EUSOIL project aided to this task and identified, described and evaluated the measures taken under the Water Framework Directive (WFD), Cross Compliance Instrument (CC) and United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) concerning their contribution to soil conservation. Urban Sprawl in Europe - The Ignored Challenge
Between 1990 and 2000 alone, more than 800,000 hectares were built on in Europe. This phenomenon is due to changing lifestyles more than increased population. The amount of space consumed per person has more than doubled over the past 50 years. Today, more than a quarter of the EU's territory has been directly affected by urban sprawl, according to a study by the European Environment Agency, which also suggests potential policies to combat the trend. R. Andreas Kraemer, Director Ecologic, was consulted as an external expert throughout the develoment of the report. Read more ...
Einsame Landschaften – Blühende Städte
Since 1950 about the same amount of land was taken into usage for settlement and transport as in the entire history in Germany before. Although the population is decreasing, increases in demand for improved living conditions and growing rates of single households will continue land development. While ecological disadvantages of urban sprawl were recognised long ago, there could also appear – under conditions of population decrease – devastating economic and social consequences.
