At the largest annual event for family farmers, ranchers and rural communities in the United States, Michael Mehling, President of Ecologic Institute in Washington DC, described European experiences with renewable energy in agriculture.

Speaking on a panel titled "Developments in Renewable Energy and Climate Policy", Michael Mehling drew attention to renewable energy opportunities for farmers in the European Union, highlighting recent trends and policy developments. During the discussion, participants expressed particular interest in the amended legislative framework for the promotion of electricity from biogas digesters under the German renewable energy act, as well as prospects for second generation biofuels and biomass in Europe.

More than 500 Farmers Union members from across the United States attended the event, which was held in Omaha, Nebraska, from 4 to 7 March 2012. Speakers included U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack, ranking member of the House Committee on Agriculture Collin Peterson, and National Farmers Union President Roger Johnson.

National Farmers Union was established in 1902 to protect and enhance the economic well-being and quality of life for family farmers and ranchers in the United States.
