Biodiversity loss is advancing across the EU due to land use change, pollution, and climate change. More than 80% of habitats in the EU are in poor condition. As part of the European Biodiversity Strategy 2030, the Nature Restoration Regulation (Regulation (EU) 2024/1991) opens a new chapter in European nature conservation. For the first time, legally binding and time-bound restoration targets have been set for all EU Member States. By 2030, restoration measures are to be implemented on at least 20% of land and marine areas and by 2050, measures must be implemented in all ecosystems in need of restoration.
Against this background, all EU Member States, including Germany, must submit drafts of national restoration plans to the EU Commission by 1 September 2026. These plans should contain detailed measures to achieve the restoration targets.
On behalf of the German Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (Bundesamt für Naturschutz – BfN), Ecologic Institute, together with other project partners, is supporting the planning and implementation of the national restoration plans. Ecologic Institute actively contributes to the content of the work, in particular through its expertise in the assessment of ecosystem conditions and the development of measures for the protection and restoration of inland and coastal ecosystems. In addition, Ecologic Institute is responsible for the overall coordination of the project, manages the communication between the individual project components, is in regular contact with the clients, and organizes key events.
