With the start of the three-year dialogue for food waste reduction in the out-of-home sector forum, the saving potential in out-of-home catering in Germany is now set up. Together with business representatives, civil society organisations, policy and research this process will develop cross-industry guidelines for action and to jointly develop and adopt binding targets. The BMEL-funded project of WWF, United Against Waste and FH Münster is supported by Ecologic Institute in the implementation of the process and dialogue. Stephanie Wunder, Senior Fellow at Ecologic Institute moderated the kick-off event on 20 February 2019 in the German Ministry for Agriculture. Topics included an overview of the European and national framework conditions as well as good practice examples from Germany, Great Britain, Sweden and Norway.

The aim of the upcoming events is to develop sector-specific and cross-industry guidelines for action together with the players in the out-of-home supply sector and to jointly develop and adopt binding targets. The results of the dialogue forum will be incorporated into the strategy for reducing food waste in Germany.

Parallel to the start of the Federal Cabinet, the National Strategy for Reducing Food Waste presented by Federal Nutrition Minister Julia Klöckner was adopted on February 20, 2019.

Within the framework of the three-year dialogue forum on the reduction of food waste in out-of-home catering, voluntary agreements for action with binding targets are to be developed.
