Between July and October 2016 this six-part webinar series brought together Arctic experts, professionals and students. The webinar series covered topics including shipping and marine governance, energy, environmental impact assessments, science, security, and indigenous communities in the Arctic.

Webinar 1: Arctic Shipping & Marine Governance

Michael Kingston, a lawyer for Marine Trade & Energy Group, DWF LLP, London, spoke about Arctic shipping and marine governance, with a focus on the Polar Code. He shared his experience presenting to the IMO on the topic of "Operationalising of the Polar Code" and presented a possibility to achieve sustainable Arctic development through the interplay of the Arctic Ice Regime Shipping System (AIRSS), the Polar Code, and best practices.

Webinar 2: Energy in the Arctic

The Arctic Summer College heard from Stephan Schott and Piper Foster Wilder on the topic of Energy in the Arctic. Stephan is a Professor in the School of Public Policy and Administration at Carleton University, with a PdD in Natural Resource and Environmental Economics from the University of Guelph. Piper Foster Wilder is the Deputy Director at Renewable Energy Alaska Project. The session was moderated by Ecologic Institute's Arne Riedel.

Webinar 3: Arctic Environmental Impact Assessments

Pamela Lesser and Sonja Bickford from the Arctic Centre, University of Lapland / Northern Institute for Environmental and Minority Law (NIEM) spoke about Environmental Impact Assessments in the Arctic. In her presentation, Pamela Lesser focused on environmental impact assessments in Finland and Canada. Sonja Bickford presented the "Arctic EIA Project".

Webinar 4 Part I: Science Communication in the Arctic

Mia Bennett, PhD candidate in the Department of Geography at UCLA and Manger of the Cryopolitics blog, talked about science communication in the Arctic. She talked about the potential, advantages, and disadvantages of blogging in science.

Webinar 5: Arctic Security

Kristian Kristensen and David Biette spoke about Arctic Security. Kristian is a Senior Researcher at the University of Copenhagen's Center for Military Studies within its Department of Political Science. David is a Global Fellow and the former Director of the Wilson Center's Polar Initiative.

Webinar 6: Arctic Indigenous Communities

This webinar discussed the role of Indigenous Communities in the Arctic. The presentations showed how indigenous communities are affected by changes in the Arctic and how they manage to adapt to them. In addition, the role of the UN was discussed. The speakers were Alexey Tsykarev, Expert Member of the Chair-Rapporteur for the United Nations Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, Jannie Staffansson, an Advisor within The Arctic Environmental Unit of the Sami Raddi/Saami Council, and Jocelyn Joe-Strack, a member of the Campagne and Aishihik First Nation and a current Walter and Duncan Gordon Foundation Jane Glassco Arctic Fellow.

Exploring the Nexus of Health and Climate Change in Arctic Indigenous Communities

The session on the Arctic Circle Assembly, including two ASC fellows and ASC moderator Arne Riedel from Ecologic Institute, begun by exploring the fundamental role that the Arctic plays in not only global climate change, but in potentially altering global weather patterns which has particular consequences for Indigenous communities. Then, the connection between health and climate change had been examined through the lens of Arctic Indigenous communities in several Arctic states. Finally, the issue of sexual violence in Indigenous communities had been discussed with a focus on the US and Canada, providing additional context as we explore the challenging relationship between climate change and Indigenous health, both today and in the future.
