The 2011 Arctic Summer College, hosted by Ecologic Institute, provides a platform for Arctic researchers to debate and develop ideas about a range of issues facing Arctic decision-makers, such as: Arctic economic, environmental and security policy; the impacts of large scale energy projects at the regional scale; and approaches to ecosystem-based management.
Recent years have seen the climate negotiations under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change fail to achieve a major breakthrough on climate change mitigation, and no such breakthrough is expected in the near future. In a study commissioned by the Friedrich Ebert Foundation, Dr. Camilla Bausch and Michael Mehling evaluate various venues and institutions addressing the climate challenge, and assess their influence on the future of global mitigation efforts. At the 2011 Alumni Conference of Lund University’s Master’s Program of International Environmental Science (LUMES) in Lund (Sweden), Elena von Sperber presented and discussed the results of the CALAMAR project, a transatlantic dialogue on marine governance lead by Ecologic Institute, which was concluded in June 2011.
Together with co-authors Alexander de Sherbinin (Columbia University), Genevieve Carr (Northern Oil and Gas Branch, Indian and Northern Affairs Canada) and Carrie Rickwood (Natural Resources Canada) Tanja Srebotnjak, Senior Fellow at Ecologic Institute, published a study in the journal Ecological Indicators on the design and testing of a global water quality index.
A conference on "The Arctic Ocean Beyond National Jurisdiction" at the University of Alaska Fairbanks from 24 to 27 July 2011 explored the opportunities and challenges of expanded human use and options for future governance of the Central Arctic Ocean. R. Andreas Kraemer of Ecologic Institute participated as invited expert contributor in the conference.
Lead by Ecuador’s Ambassador to Germany, his Excellency Jorge Jurado, and Ivonne Baki, who is the country’s top negotiator for the Yasuni-ITT Initiative, a high-level delegation presented an Ecuadorian proposal for the protection of climate and biodiversity at the Ecologic Institute.
For the third time, the ICAP Training Course on Emissions Trading brought together experts from emerging economies and developing countries to introduce emissions trading as a tool for climate protection and discuss possibilities for implementing such schemes in developing countries. The event took place in Beijing, China, from 23 May to 1 June 2011, and was the first of its kind held outside of Europe. Twenty-seven decision makers from eight Asian countries attended the course, which was led by Michael Mehling, Benjamin Görlach and Miriam Schröder.
