In the context of the Common Implementation Strategy (CIS) of the EU Water Framework Directive (WFD), Ecologic conceptualised and organised a workshop on Heavily Modified Water Bodies for the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU) on 30 and 31 May 2002 in Berlin.

The workshop on the identification and designation of Heavily Modified Water Bodies (HMWB) in Berlin funded by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, and Nuclear Safety was a platform for the 80 participants to discuss the draft version of the CIS guidance document on Heavily Modified & Artificial Water Bodies (HMWB & AWB). Participants included the authors of 34 European case studies on HMWB, the HMWB CIS working group including Accession Countries, stakeholders as well as representatives from other CIS working groups. The discussions during the workshop served as a basis for the revision of the draft EU guidance document on HMWB as well as the synthesis report of the 34 HMWB case studies.

For more information on the activities of the HMWB CIS Working Group supported by Ecologic see the description of the project 'Support of the Working Group on Heavily Modified Water Bodies of the Water Framework Directive Common Implementation Strategy'.
