In a lecture at the Hong Kong Advanced Institute for Cross-Disciplinary Studies (HKAICS) of the City University of Hong Kong, R. Andreas Kraemer of Ecologic Institute explained the on-going EU agenda to measure societal welfare and well-being in a more robust and inclusive way. He covered current research on new metrics and paradigms for economic and social policy-making. The presentation is available for download.

China abandoned its first attempt to develop a "Green GDP" some years ago. However, the need remains for better ways to measure progress towards economic, social and sustainability goals, and to integrate non-economic and economic indicators in meaningful decision-support systems. This is especially true for the fast-growing Southern and coastal regions of China, where diverging policy objectives need to be brought into harmony, and where indicators are needed also at local and regional scales.
