1. Key Performance Indicators for Transboundary Basins in Africa - Workshops Summary
This project aims at developing a set of governance as well as technical indicators to be used in analyzing the current performance of transboundary river and lake basins in Africa and to test these indicator sets in order to support management processes at the basin level in selected basins. After the initial discussions, which were started during a first joint workshop in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso in November 2007, three focused workshops were held with representatives from selected basin organizations.

2. Learning from Europe's Mistakes - The US Fell Behind in Climate Policy, but is now Catching up Fast - Publication
"Europe's Bid - What we can offer Barack Obama" is the theme of the first issues in 2009 of the journal "Internationale Politik", published by the German Council on Foreign Relations (DGAP). R. Andreas Kraemer contributed a preview of the possibilities for future cooperation between the US and Europe in climate and energy policy for jointly meeting the transformational challenges ahead, and in the Arctic, where the future of international relations may well be decided.

3. Ecologic at the UN Climate Conference in Poznan
The UN Climate Conference in Poznan, Poland, from 1 to 12 December 2008 was an important stepping stone in the negotiations on the future international climate regime that are set to conclude in Copenhagen in 2009. Ecologic was represented by Dr. Ralph Czarnecki participating as part of the German delegation and Ecologic Director R. Andreas Kraemer chairing a side event.

4. Climate and Energy - Lessons Learned: The European Perspective - Publication
Internationally, the European Union has been acknowledged as a forerunner in the adoption and implementation of sustainable energy and climate policies. But despite remarkable successes, the EU has also encountered serious difficulties on its way - yielding important learning experiences. In their reflection on "Climate and Energy - Lessons Learned: The European Perspective", Michael Mehling and Dr. Camilla Bausch outline the history and present of climate policy efforts in Europe, and identify the most important lessons that can be drawn from the European experience.

5. Climate Protection Policy of the Grand Coalition - A look back and a look ahead - Publication
In 2006/2007, climate change experienced both a remarkable and unexpected increase in significance in political and public perception. In Germany, the grand coalition took up the issue and chancellor Angela Merkel gave climate change top priority for both the German EU-Presidency and "her" G8-Summit. Dr. Camilla Bausch and Benjamin Görlach take stock of German climate policy since the dual presidency in 2007 and provide an outlook for the future.

6. The policy impacts of environmental valuations - Publication
Valuing both the environment and the changes in the level of environmental quality is of central importance to environmental policy formulation, as it puts the costs of obtaining certain environmental goals into perspective. In this article, which was published in the December 2008 issue of "Ökologisches Wirtschaften", Holger Gerdes and Anneke von Raggamby propose a methodology to assess the policy impacts of environmental valuations.

7. Climate change: Identifying the impacts on public finances - Lecture
In an explorative study commissioned by the Federal Ministry of Finance, the Ecologic Institute is currently analysing the long-term impacts of climate change on Germany's financial budget. On 26 November 2008, Ingo Bräuer presented first results to the Ministry's Working Group on Public Finance and discussed methodological questions with the experts in the audience.

8. DAAD/AICGS Seeking Fellowship Applications for research stays of two months in Washington DC
The American Institute for Contemporary German Studies (AICGS) is now accepting applications for the DAAD/AICGS Research Fellowship Program, sponsored by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). The application deadline for Fall 2009 (June 2009 - December 2009) is 28 February 2009. The Program is designed to bring scholars and specialists working on Germany, Europe, and/or transatlantic relations to AICGS for research stays of two months.
