Newsweek: No Country Is More ‘Green By Design’ than Germany

News
Germany is the "Best Governed Country in Environment".  Newsweek Magazine, in its edition of 7-14 July 2008, carried an article on the development and achievements of German environmental, energy and climate policies.  Sascha Müller-Kraenner of TNC and Ecologic, and R. Andreas Kraemer of Ecologic are quoted in the article.

Stefan Theil's article "No Country Is More ‘Green By Design’ [than Germany]" reviews the development of environmental policy in Germany and how it is aligned with industrial and energy policy.  It explains how Germany rose to rank in 13th place in the Environmental Performance Index (EPI) of Yale and Columbia Universities.

As a sign of rising US interest in environmental policy, Newsweek published a Special Report on the EPI entitled "Green Countries – A global report card on nations doing the most, and least, to clean up the environment".

The publication of the EPI in 2006 generated high levels of media attention (see story on the 2006 Pilot EPI which ranked Germany in 22nd place).  Ecologic participated in the 2005 methodological review of the EPI.

Ecologic also compiled and analysed the data sources of the EPI for Germany, and assessed the methodologies of the index. Based on this assessment, both the scientific and political relevance of the index for German environmental policy performance were determined.  The report is published by the German Federal Environment Agency.
