1. The Implementation of the Water Framework Directive and the Floods Directive – Publication

   The fifth Water Framework Directive Implementation Report of the Commission reveals significant improvements in knowledge and reporting on the Water Framework Directive compared to the previous cycle. More Member States reported in a timely manner with more comprehensive, relevant and reliable information. Ecologic Institute supported the preparation of the report on assessment of the second River Basin Management Plans through the development of the assessment methodology, conducting the assessments in accordance with the methodology; and preparing technical reports. 2. Reducing Consumer Food Waste – REFRESH Policy Brief

   Public campaigns and other policy instruments can significantly influence consumer behaviour and contribute to a reduction of consumer food waste. However, there exist very few studies evaluating the extent to which policy interventions actually reduced or prevented food waste. In this REFRESH Policy Brief, Ecologic Institute’s Stephanie Wunder summarizes REFRESH findings on consumer behaviour as well as related research results, and derives policy recommendations to reduce consumer food waste.

3. Tackling Food Waste Across the Supply Chain – Webinar Series

   Bringing together food waste experts from across Europe, the REFRESH Community of Experts (CoE) has launched a series of four webinars, hosted from 9 April to 2 May 2019, on 'Tackling Food Waste Across the Supply Chain'. The series demonstrates how policy makers, manufacturers, retailers, distributors, municipalities and many more organisations involved in the food supply chain can effectively address food waste. This month-long webinar series, offers an opportunity to gain insights from case studies, ask questions of the speakers and to solicit additional information.

4. Implementing Nature-Based Solutions Successfully – Factsheets

   In the CLEVER Cities project, three factsheets on nature-based solutions (NBS) were developed. They summarise the conclusions of three project reports, which were prepared by Ecologic Institute. These reports focus on 1) barriers and success factors for a successful implementation of nature-based solutions (NBS), 2) business models for the use of NBS and 3) financing sources and the potential of public-private partnerships for NBS. 5. Implementing Nature-Based Solutions in Cities – Workshop

   On 7 March 2019, Polish and German NBS experts for nature-based solutions (NBS) met at the Ecologic Institute in Berlin for an informal exchange of experience and ideas. The group included engineers, planners, landscape designers, academics, policy specialists, artists, and municipal officers. The participants had a varied experience with implementing NBS – from planning citywide green infrastructure concepts or eco-districts to realising specific solutions together with citizens, such as storm water gardens or the revitalisation of riverbanks. Outcomes from this meeting will be integrated into upcoming "Climate NBS Polska" project activities, including the development of a catalogue of nature-based solutions and an overview of policy instruments, that cities can implement to support NBS implementation.

6. European Energy Transition 2030 – Publication

   The 2030 targets for decarbonising the EU economy have been agreed, but what does this actually mean for the European energy and transport systems? In a new publication, Agora Energiewende is providing exactly this "Big Picture" of the EU energy transformation up until 2030. Based on an analysis of where we are today and where we need to be in 2030, the authors propose ten priorities and four flagship initiatives to make the European energy transition a success. Ecologic Institute supported Agora Energiewende in developing the publication, which is available for download.

7. Phasing out Coal in the German Energy Sector – Publication

   In January 2019, Germany made a big step towards a coal phase-out: A stakeholder commission established by the federal government agreed on a schedule for plant retirement and on measures to support coal regions. For experts and journalists seeking to understand the context of the phase-out decision, scientists from the German Institute for Economic Research, Ecologic Institute, and the Wuppertal Institute have developed a comprehensive reader detailing what is at stake. The publication explains why the phase-out is needed and how it can become a success. It also provides facts and figures on the German coal industry, including a list of all large coal plants and their technical properties. The report is also available for download in English.

8. Dialogues on Long-Term Climate Strategies – Workshop

   The third set of dialogue workshops for government officials and related experts from the Climate Recon 2050 project were held in Copenhagen at the end of February 2019. The Climate Recon 2050 project aims to support policy-makers required to deliver 2050 climate strategies by the end of 2019, as mandated for all Member States under the EU Governance Regulation. To this end, the project team have been organizing two main fora: 1) a technical dialogue for modellers and other experts designing 2050 climate policy scenarios and 2) a policy-maker platform to create a space for experience sharing among representatives from different EU countries. Matthias Duwe from Ecologic Institute opened one of the dialogue workshops.

9. Using the Subsoil to Be Better Prepared for Droughts – Stakeholder Workshop

   In January 2019, the stakeholder workshop "Using the Subsoil to Better Prepare for Droughts - An Acceptance Analysis of Measures to Enhance the Subsoil" of the BMBF-funded BonaRes project "Soil³ - Sustainable Subsoil Management" took place in Bonn. The aim of the workshop was to discuss the prevailing opinions on subsoil management measures. Ecologic Institute researchers discussed with farmers and other ecological actors under which conditions they would implement or support these measures. The protocol is available for download.
