1. On the Road to Sustainable Production in the Enlarged EU
Participants at this conference discussed the achievements of Europe's keystone industrial pollution law, the IPPC directive, and began to grapple with the challenges ahead. Participants reported that they were very happy with the directive, almost ten years after its entry into force. Commission representatives, however, stressed that Member States must improve their implementation of the directive ahead of the key 2007 deadline.

2. Effects of Germany's Ecological Tax Reforms - Publication
Since its inception in 1999, the German Ecological Tax Reform has been the subject of major debate. Although it has proven to be an effective instrument for reducing CO2 emissions and for stimulating employment and innovations, the Ecological Tax Reform is still heavily criticised or rejected outright, mainly because of its alleged impacts on economic competitiveness. Against this background, Ecologic and the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW Berlin) have investigated the effects that the reform has had on the environment, employment and technological innovations. The results of the study have now been released.

3. New Energy Law – the German Energy Sector on its way to liberalisation - Publication
On 13 July 2005, the new German energy law entered into force. In their article, Dr. Camilla Bausch and Julia Rufin LL.M. explain the implementation of the European Directives in accelerating the liberalisation of the internal electricity and gas market.

4. Implementing the Economic Aspects of the Water Framework Directive in the Elbe River Basin – Workshop Results
The international workshop "Implementing the Economic Aspects of the WFD – Future Challenges in the Elbe River Basin" , held in Leipzig on 7-8 July 2005, saw a gathering of 60 WFD experts from all over Europe. The results of this workshop have now been summarised by Britta Pielen, Benjamin Görlach and Robert Holländer.

5. Feed-In Tariffs’ and Eco-Taxes’ Contributions to Innovation - Experiences from Germany - Lecture
On 12 October 2005, the Climate Policy Center and the German Marshall Fund of the United States conducted an international workshop designed to clarify and improve R&D strategy for climate change solutions. The one day meeting helped experts in the United States and Europe focus on key strategic questions about relevant R&D priorities and policies. Senior Fellow Markus Knigge gave a presentation on the impacts of the German Renewable Energy Sources Act and the Eco-taxes on innovation and commercialisation of clean technologies.

6. Ecologic Transatlantic Fellows: Aaron Best and David Campbell
Ecologic is pleased to welcome two Transatlantic Fellows for a stage from October to December, 2005. Aaron Best and David Campbell are Fellows with the Robert Bosch Foundation. While at Ecologic, Aaron Best is focusing on European transportation and water policy, utilizing his strong background in economics and public administration. David Campbell, a lawyer and accountant, is contributing to a chapter describing historic and demographic aspects of transportation for the German Council for Sustainable Development, among other projects.
