1. From Energy Democracy to Adaptation – ELEEP Podcast Series

   The ELEEP Network podcast series focuses on current developments in climate and energy policy on both sides of the Atlantic, delivering in-depth discussion and expert interviews on a range of pressing topics directly to your mobile device. The latest four episodes feature insights from the June 2017 ELEEP conference on "Tipping Points – Finding the Energy Climate Balance," including keynote talks by some of the brightest minds in the field. 2. EU Climate Policies: friend, foe or bystander to forest restoration and carbon sinks? – Publication

   Next to steep cuts in greenhouse gas emissions, the removal of CO2 from the atmosphere is essential to keep average global temperature increases to 1.5°C, and well below 2°C. At this point in time, there is effectively only one realistic and sustainable way to help remove large amounts of CO2 from the atmosphere: restoring degraded forests. A strong and reliable governance framework is a pre-condition to restore degraded forests at the necessary scale. A new Ecologic paper discusses how to design such a governance framework for the EU. 3. After the Elections: What matters for German policymakers in the EU's energy package – Publication

   The EU is currently negotiating a comprehensive reorientation of energy and climate policy for the decade 2020-2030. In this strategy brief, Katharina Umpfenbach discusses how the next German federal government can shape the EU negotiations so as to create an EU electricity market regulation that is conducive to the German energy transition. Four central elements are identified: raising the ambition of energy targets and introducing long-term targets, developing effective oversight instruments to ensure compliance, adjusting the electricity market to the needs of wind and solar power, and initiating an exit strategy for coal firing. 4. Towards a Harmonised Methodology for Statistical Indicators – Publication

   Ecologic Institute co-authored the guideline "Relevance of Indicators for Policy Making" which is the third and final publication in the Eurostat's series. This guideline takes a closer look at how indicators, which take up an increasingly prominent role in the political sphere, can improve policy making by providing examples from theory and practice. It also puts forward recommendations for researchers and experts on how to create indicators that are relevant, and points out the potential stumbling blocks of using indicators to guide political processes. 5. Factor X. Challenges, Implementation Strategies and Examples for a Sustainable Use of Natural Resources – Publication

   This book describes and analyses necessities for a more resource-efficient world. Authors from across Europe, discuss solutions for a more sustainable use of natural resources and present good practice examples – such as repair services, digitalised construction projects and chemical leasing. The book addresses decision-makers and experts from the fields of policy development, industry, academia, civil society, and the media. Ecologic Institute's Mandy Hinzmann, Nick Evans, Terri Kafyeke, Stephen Bell and Martin Hirschnitz-Garbers took on the role of managing editors.

6. REFRESH Community of Experts – Launch

   In October 2017 the REFRESH Community of Experts (CoE) was launched. Food waste experts are invited to share their expertise and resources. The CoE is a digital network for sharing initiatives and best practice on food waste prevention. Users of the CoE will be able to find and share research and resources, initiate discussions and connect with fellow experts. The CoE is created in partnership with the EU Platform on Food Losses and Food Waste (FLW), established by the European Commission.

7. The Contribution of a Sustainable Economy to Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals – SustEcon Conference

   The international SustEcon Conference, organised by the NaWiKo project, took place in September 2017. Several panel discussions were held, touching upon the role of the Sustainable Development Goals in fostering a more sustainable economy, pathways of transformation, measuring sustainability, and how to scale up existing sustainable solutions and business models. 8. Nature-based Solutions and Green Infrastructure – Presentations

   Green infrastructure (GI) and nature-based solutions (NBS) are increasingly recognised for their potential to contribute to a range of urban challenges and policy objectives. But, how can they be mainstreamed in practice and to what extent do current policy frameworks support their implementation? At the international conference on "Urban Green Infrastructure – Connecting People and Nature for Sustainable Cities", Ecologic Institute's McKenna Davis and Sandra Naumann addressed these and other issues in targeted sessions. The conference, held in Malmö (Sweden) from 20 to 21 September 2017, was the final conference of the EU-funded GreenSurge project.
