  1. Public Views on European Smart Home Market Development – Publication

Smart homes offer significant potential to enable new energy saving services and capabilities offered via smart grids. However, research reveals that consumer perception regarding reliability and data privacy risks, as well as high costs of technologies act as significant barriers to consumer acceptance of smart homes. In a paper, published in Energy Research and Social Science, Ecologic Institute's Benjamin Boteler and co-authors investigated the differences and similarities in technical and economic drivers and barriers to smart home market development in the UK, Germany, and Italy. The paper is available for download.

  2. The Role of Behavior in Energy Transition – Publication

A study of leading city and community-level energy transitions demonstrates behavioral changes across personal, social, and external dimensions. Research from "Transition towards Low-Carbon Energy Security" (MILESECURE 2050) was presented at the 3rd BEHAVE Energy Conference in Oxford (United Kingdom) in September 2014. Giovanni Caiati (Laboratory of Citizenship Sciences) and Adam Pearson, Transatlantic Fellow at Ecologic Institute, presented research that energy transition can be considered a social product, and not as a technological process alien to society. The poster is available for download.

  3. Training for Lebanese Climate Negotiators – Workshop

In September 2014, Dr. Camilla Bausch and Lena Donat conducted a 2-day training to enhance the negotiation skills of Lebanese negotiators at the international negotiations on climate change. The final workshop report is available for download.

  4. Economic Instruments and Marine Litter Control – Publication

Economic instruments and marine litter control, published in Ocean and Coastal Management, provides a comprehensive up-to-date review of the literature on the economic instruments that can reduce marine litter. The paper, written by Frans Oosterhuis, Elissaios Papyrakis, and Ecologic Institute's Benjamin Boteler, assesses their cost of implementation, level of effectiveness as well as indirect environmental and socioeconomic effects (externalities) that may arise as a result of their implementation.

  5. The Role of Emission Rights in Controlling Water Pollution – Publication

Are tradable permits in water pollution control a useful instrument regarding the protection of the environment? In this book chapter, experts from the Ecologic Institute make recommendations on the strategies for introducing tradable water pollution rights. They point out opportunities and limitations and discuss the instrument’s compatibility in instrument "mixes".

On 7 Ocotber 2014, Ecologic Institute's Rodrigo Vidaurre held a presentation on regional governance responses to increasing drought risks at the 2014 international conference "Our Climate – Our Future", organised by the Helmholtz Network for Regional Climate Change. The talk, part of the Conference Session on "Integrated strategies for climate change mitigation and adaptation", presented the methodology and insights generated by an analysis of the regional governance settings. This work is part of the Interreg IVB project DROP. The presentation slides are available for download.
