  1. Towards Sustainable Development Goals – Publication

This report, authored by Ecologic Institute, first describes the two processes for the development of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the post-2015 development agenda, as well as the options to integrate the results of these processes to arrive at one set of common goals. The report also discusses howa set of SDGs might be structured, and a number of topic clusters, to demonstrate what SDGs could look like. The report is available for download.

  2. Climate Adaptation Strategies in the European Union – Policy Brief

How are Member States in the EU implementing National Adaptation Strategies (NAS's)? How do their approaches differ, and what lessons can we learn? Using case studies from across Europe, this policy brief analyzes processes for designing, implementing, and reviewing NAS's. It identifies the positive role being played by the EU Adaptation Strategy in influencing NAS implementation, while also identifying shared challenges, including those related to short political timeframes and concretely realizing mainstreaming of climate adaptation into all sectors. The policy brief was edited by Ecologic Institute's Andrew Reid and is available for download.

  3. Emissions Trading in the Climate Policy Mix – Publication

Emissions trading promises the achievement of a pre-defined environmental outcome at least cost. If the system works and key assumptions hold, it would seem to be an "optimal" climate policy instrument. On closer inspection, however, it is less clear what constitutes an "optimal" climate policy. In this paper Ecologic Institute's Benjamin Görlach argues that optimality involves a range of criteria beyond short-term economic efficiency, but also has to consider the longer-term dynamic efficiency, as well as the political, administrative and legal feasibility of policy instruments.

  4. Energy Subsidies: Paying the Polluter – Publication

Energy subsidies come in many shapes and forms. Reducing them is a rare win-win. Both public budgets and the climate would profit. In this book chapter, Frans Oosterhuis and Katharina Umpfenbach dig into the conundrum of why energy subsidy reform remains slow across the world, despite its obvious benefits.

  5. New EU-Governance in the Energy Sector – What can be learned from Projects of Common Interest (PCIs)? – Workshop

What shape will the future governance framework of European climate and energy policy take? The proposal submitted by the European Commission at the beginning of this year raises more questions than it answers in this regard. Dr. Camilla Bausch and Christine Lucha of the Ecologic Institute invited experts to a workshop to discuss what impact the new EU governance has on the electricity sector and how to design the requested regional cooperation. The discussions focused on the workshop participants' experience with and lessons drawn from Projects of Common Interest. A workshop report and the presentations of the workshop are available for download.

  6. Germany's Energy and Climate Policy – Publication

The German energy transition is at the heart of its climate and energy policy, but also determines Germany's attitude in international negotiations. Apart from the necessary revision of the Renewable Energy Act, the new coalition that took power in December 2013 will likely continue the previous climate and energy policy. The main changes are of a structural nature, and relate to a new distribution of competences between the Economy and Environment Ministries, which are, furthermore, for the first time, headed by members of the same political party. The report is available for download.

  7. International Legal Framework for Measures Supporting Renewable Energies – Publication

As renewable energy sources are more widely used and corresponding support systems expanded, the economic significance of the sector is also growing. This, in turn, also leads to a growing potential for trade disputes involving renewable energy production. This study on renewable energy law focuses on the international legal framework relevant to support systems for renewable energy. The study as well as an executive summary in English, are available for download.

  8. Biodiversity Narratives and their Implications for International Cooperation – Workshop Series

On 12 and 18 June 2014, project workshops entitled "Biodiversity and development - Different biodiversity narratives and their implications for international cooperation" took place in Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) and Quito (Ecuador). The subsequent expert workshop was held in Berlin (Germany) on 3 July 2014. Discussions focused on how different perceptions of nature and biodiversity can potentially lead to divergent conservation and management strategies, and thereby affect development cooperation at the national and local levels. The workshop series was organized by Ecologic Institute in cooperation with the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ). The presentation slides are available for download.
