From 27 to 31 October 2012, Ecologic Institute organized and implemented a program for Korean journalists and representatives from the Korean Ministry of Environment. The program focused on German and European approaches on energy and climate change policy as well as on emissions trading systems (ETS).

The program took place as a follow up to a German Embassy sponsored conference on climate change in Seoul, Korea in October 2011, involving German climate scientists. The study tour in Berlin aimed at providing further information to journalists and showing best practice examples.

The program included discussions with representatives from the Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU), International Carbon Action Partnership (ICAP), and the Institute for Applied Ecology (Öko Institute) regarding the EU ETS. Representatives from the Innovation Centre for Mobility Societal Change (InnoZ) introduced E-mobility and smart city concepts and provided the opportunity to test-drive E-cars and E bikes.

A field trip to the energy self-sufficient village of Feldheim in Brandenburg showed the group one of Germany's examples of local energy autonomy via private local heating and power grids.

A Dinner Dialogue on the German nuclear phase-out, featuring R. Andreas Kraemer and additional experts from the Berlin science, Think-Tank, NGO and policy community, provided the opportunity for further exchange and discussions with the invited experts.

The program was sponsored by the German Federal Foreign Office and organized by the Ecologic Institute in close cooperation with the German Embassy in South Korea.

South Korea will implement an emissions trading scheme in 2015, becoming one of the first Asian countries to implement a nationwide cap-and-trade system.
