The British-German Environment Forum (BGEF) 2001 was organized by Ecologic. It took place in Berlin, on 5 and 6 July 2001, and addressed the issue of transport and the environment.
The aim of the conference entitled "Escaping from Gridlock" was to identify best practices in each country. The conference focused on the German and British key ideas in transport policy that relate to the environment and sustainable development. In this context, working groups addressed the issues of: privatisation and deregulation, technical solutions and the management of transport demand, and transport planning methods with environmental benefits. Innovative solutions such as light railways, transport taxes, inter-modal means of transport, and ways of reducing car dependency are also discussed.
The BGEF brings together policy makers, business leaders, environmentalists and practitioners in business, local government, the voluntary sector and research to discuss the challenges of environmentally sustainable development in the UK and Germany.
