Oberthür, Sebastian et al. 2003: Participation of Non-Governmental Organisations in International Environmental Governance. Legal Basis and Practical Experience. [Ecologic Briefs on International Relations and Sustainable Development]. Berlin: ecoscript.

The main conclusions and results of a study exploring functions, rules and practices of NGO participation in international environmental co-operation are presented in an Ecologic Brief.

Many actors such as the EU, UNECE and UNEP increasingly recognise the potential benefits of an enhanced involvement of civil society in international policy-making on sustainable development.

This Ecologic Brief identifies a number of options for a strengthened participation of NGOs in international environmental governance and is intended to contribute to the related international discussions.

This Ecologic Brief is a summary of the book Participation of Non-Governmental Organisations in International Environmental Co-operation - Legal Basis and Practical Experience. The Book and the Ecologic Brief are results of the project NGO's in International Environmental Policy. The full study [pdf, 923 KB, English] of the project is available for download.
