Joke Unger is a Legal Trainee at Ecologic Institute. He is being trained by Dr. Ralph Bodle, LLM, and supports the entire Legal Team to gain the broadest possible insight into the work of a think tank specializing in environmental law. His particular focus is on projects relating to the new UN Convention on Biological Diversity for areas beyond national jurisdiction (BBNJ). Joke Unger grew up bilingually in the German-Danish border region and is also fluent in English.

Before joining Ecologic Institute, Joke Unger gained his first experience with international law during his studies at the Walther Schücking Institute for International Law at the Christian-Albrecht University of Kiel (Germany). During his legal clerkship at the Hanseatic Higher Regional Court in Bremen, he not only got to know the work in civil and criminal jurisdiction as well as in a civil law firm with a focus on Danish clients, but he also gained important insights into the work of a supreme federal authority, the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency in Hamburg. There, he was able to gain his first practical experience in the field of the international law of the sea.

Joke studied law in Berlin and Kiel, specializing in International and European law. After successfully completing his first state examination in 2021, he was able to deepen this experience during an English-language master's program at Utrecht University (Netherlands) in the field of public international law with a focus on international law of the sea and environmental law. His master's thesis dealt with the status of the Kingdom of Denmark as an Arctic state in the event of Greenlandic independence.
