19 until 23 September 2010, Davis, California - Tanja Srebotnjak
Tanja Srebotnjak from Ecologic Institute participated in the inaugural workshop on science communication and policy development organized by the new Heinz Center's Institute for Science Communication & Policy Development at the University of California, Davis in collaboration with the John Muir Institute for the Environment, COMPASS, and the Keystone Institute. From 19 until 23 September the 20 participants from US agencies, NGOs, and academia immersed themselves in a series of interactive exercises, lectures, and panel discussions with policy-makers, the media, and communication experts to learn how to craft their message, inject it in policy development, and communicate successfully with policy-makers and the media.

In addition to the exercises, the participants had the opportunity to learn first-hand from prominent California lawmakers and policymakers about the intricacies of policy-making and how to effectively bring their research findings to bear on it. The workshop culminated in a joint memorandum drafting exercise on the multiple benefits of carbon sequestration in California, which was presented to the media in a press call and will be available from the ISCPD website.
