Infrastructure is key to the transition from a society based on fossil fuels to one that is powered by renewable energy. While most of the infrastructure planning and decision-making is done at national level, the EU has a significant coordinating role, especially in the rollout of cross-border infrastructure. Stronger EU-level governance can thus lead to a more resilient and cost-efficient climate neutral energy system, which is needed to reach climate neutrality by 2050.

What policies do we need to promote climate neutral infrastructure in support of the EU's climate ambition?

In this 3rd episode, together with infrastructure and energy experts Bettina Kampman (CE Delft) and Katharina Umpfenbach (DENA, the German Energy Agency), we uncover the essential role of infrastructure in climate policy by examining the EU's role in rolling out the infrastructure for a resilient climate-neutral economy. We discuss how recent EU policies are proving to be a good driver to speed up the energy transition and how more attention to infrastructure as a separate topic is needed.
We also explore the role of the integrated EU energy market and synergies between different infrastructure types, the challenges and opportunities of cross-border connections, and the need for EU-wide planning and infrastructure strategy.
