As the Arctic Summer College (ASC) approaches the end of its 6th year, it reflects just how far the program has come since its first class in 2011. The program has retained its core commitment of furthering multidisciplinary learning on a variety of Arctic issues by engaging with experts and exchanging views against a backdrop of a lively learning environment. This year’s one-of-a-kind eight-week international virtual campus covered topics including shipping and marine governance, energy, environmental impact assessments, science, security, and indigenous communities in the Arctic. The 2016 Arctic Summer College witnessed a major expansion that has further augmented its vision of preparing Arctic leaders to best preserve biodiversity and ecosystem health in the Arctic while building a unique Arctic network. On 23 May 2016, the ELEEP Network hosted a Side Event at the May UNFCCC meeting in Bonn. The event featured guest speakers Aki Kachi (ELEEP Fellow 2015/2016) and Michael Mehling (MIT). Matthias Duwe (Head of Climate, Ecologic Institute) moderated the event. During the event, the speakers discussed existing options for the development of carbon markets post-Paris and provided a perspective on what they could mean for carbon markets in the US and the EU. A group of 12 decision makers from the Midwest in the USA came to Germany from 15 until 21 November 2015 in order to explore and discuss German energy policy and aspects of structural change in former industrial and coal regions. A Review of the 5th Arctic Summer College

The Arctic Summer College is proud to have recently completed its fifth successful year. From June 25 to August 13, the 20 selected Arctic Summer College Fellows participated in eight webinars on various topics relevant to the Arctic, including Indigenous Actors and Arctic Decision-making, Arctic Energy and Climate Change Adaptation. Fellows became part of a network of emerging Arctic leaders from different disciplines and regions and were able to share and discuss ideas with expert speakers. Read more

Robert Swan - Stories from Beyond Two Poles

On the 15 of September 2014, the polar explorer Robert Swan held a presentation at Ecologic Institute regarding his trip to the North and the South Pole. The English environmentalist Robert Swan has the honour of being the first man to reach both geographical poles on foot. Starting from his expeditions onward, Swan has dealt with the local environmental and political problems. As a visiting professor and motivational speaker, Swan makes himself available to organisations such as Ecologic Institute and associated groups to discuss and promote solutions to environmental issues such as global warming, glacial melting and pollution. He also publishes works on these subjects.Read more
