Transatlantic Fellowships

Ecologic Transatlantic Fellowship Program

Young professionals working with similar institutes, with foundations or in academia in the US or Canada have the opportunity to spend a period of time at Ecologic. In advance of the fellowship, Ecologic and the Fellow will tailor his or her work program jointly, taking into account both the Fellow’s interests and Ecologic’s current work program.

Each year, Ecologic brings young professionals to its headquarters in Berlin to participate in its international environmental research and consulting program. Fellows join international collaborative project teams and have the opportunity to conduct research and co-author reports. In addition, Fellows often participate in various environmental and transatlantic events hosted by various organizations in Berlin, enabling them to gain a broader understanding of important policy issues.

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, preferably four to six months in advance of the desired start date. German language skills are an asset but not required. To apply, please send a full resume, academic record, and a writing sample (e.g. article, academic paper) in English. Please state the preferred start date and duration, and indicate your level of German language skills.

Applications should be sent to Heike Hildebrand or Aaron Best at jobs@ecologic.eu.

McCloy Fellowships in Environmental Affairs

Each year, Ecologic’s U.S. partner organisation, The American Council on Germany (ACG), offers McCloy Fellowships in Environmental Affairs. The Fellowships provide a unique opportunity for environmental policy mid-career professionals and academics from Germany and America to travel abroad for one month to conduct independent research, exchange ideas and best practices, and form lasting collaborative partnerships with transatlantic colleagues. Meredith Carter Transatlantic Fellow Oct - Nov 2007

"My experience as a Transatlantic Fellow at Ecologic was an incredible opportunity to gain a better understanding of European Environmental Policy, and develop a more global perspective on environmental issues, particularly those related to water. The team at Ecologic has such an incredible amount of experience and expertise on a wide range of environmental, social and economic issues, and the Transatlantic fellowship program made it possible for me to learn a great deal through my direct interaction and collaboration with staff. There are many similarities yet profound differences in water related issues between Canada and Europe, and my time at Ecologic enabled me to begin to understand some of these issues. I found the experience of working internationally also provided me with a different perspective on Canada, and its role in global environmental issues, which will definitely impact my future activities."

Ana-Mari Hamada Transatlantic Fellow 2002-2003

"Ecologic is so much more than just a 'think tank'.... it is a creative greenhouse that cultivates a new generation of European and International experts responsible for developing relevant and innovative responses to the most pressing challenges faced by decision makers today. Thanks to my tenure as a Transatlantic Fellow the skills and opportunities I acquired transformed me from well meaning political scientist with an interest in water policy into engaged professional committed to building the relationship between Latin America and Europe and passionate about promoting sustainable development of the rural regions of the Humid Tropics. Without having learned from Ecologic the practice and value of international collaboration, networking across society, and interdisciplinary approach to problem solving, my current role as Development Director at the EARTH University in Costa Rica would have been nothing more than an unrealized dream."

Melissa Keeley Transatlantic Fellow Jan - Nov 2003

"My tenure as an Ecologic Transatlantic Fellow was an important step in preparation for my career as a researcher and academic with facility in both the European and North American arenas. Thanks to Ecologic's collaborations with organizations throughout Europe and North America, my work there helped me develop a greater understanding of the potential for transatlantic exchange on issues of environmental policy. This experience certainly shaped my research (at the Technical University of Berlin, Harvard, and now Florida International University) on ecologically-oriented stormwater management, for which I received a three-year Graduate Research Fellowship from the US National Science Foundation. Ecologic provided an exceptional opportunity to work with a truly international group of dynamic and accomplished colleagues. Spearheading projects of tremendous depth and scope, Ecologic is a unique center actively shaping European and international environmental policy."
