Public Participation in SIAs of Trade Agreements

Since 1999, the European Commission has been undertaking a series of Sustainable Impact Assessments (SIAs) of multilateral and regional trade agreements. On invitation, Markus Knigge presented at the EASY-ECO conference, organised by the Impact Assessment Research Centre in the University of Manchester's School of Environment and Development, a paper on the role of civil society engagement in these assessments. Trade, intellectual property rights and sustainable development (IPDEV)

Intellectual property right (IPR) rules have strong impacts on economic growth, environmental protection and social objectives. Within the IPDEV project Ecologic identifies IPR-related policies which are supportive to sustainable development goals. Evaluation of the Commission's urban Cooperation Framework

Together with the Institute for European Environmental Policy (IEEP) London and the Institute for European Policy Prague, Ecologic is evaluating the European Co-operation Framework to promote Urban Sustainable Development. A midterm review of the co-operation framework is being undertaken. On this basis the Commission will decide on its future design.

The co-operation framework to promote Urban Sustainable Development aims to provide financial and technical support to networks of local authorities for the exchange of good practice in relation to urban sustainable development.

Techniques for Evaluation of Sustainability Assessment Tools (Sustainability A-Test)

In the course of the 6th Framework Programme, Ecologic participated in the "Sustainability A-Test" project. Coordinated by our Dutch network partner IVM, 18 research institutes from 9 different countries compared different policy appraisal and evaluation tools, in order to assess the contribution of policy initiatives to a sustainable development. National Sustainable Development Strategy in Germany

Consumer Interests and Sustainable Development in International Law

Sustainable Consumption is one of the key factors on the way to Sustainable Develoment. So far, the implementation of suatinable consumption lacks legally binding international obligations. This study therefore identifies whether and to what extend existing international agreements or organisations could serve as a tool to implement aspects of sustainable development. In addition, the study offers recommendations how further policy integration in the field of sustainable consumption can be achieved. Particular emphasis is placed on international trade law.
