Ecologic Institute US

The Ecologic Institute US is a think-tank for applied environmental research, policy analysis and consultancy. It is dedicated to bringing fresh ideas to environmental policy and sustainable development. Founded in 2008, the Ecologic Institute in Washington DC evolved out of the Transatlantic Program of Ecologic Institute, Berlin, Germany, and focuses on European environmental policy and integration, climate policy, transatlantic outreach, economics and infrastructure, the United States and European Union in the world, and biodiversity.

Ecologic Institute, Washington DC, is a legally and financially independent IRS 501(c)(3) public charity.

Urban-rural energy investments: possibilities for EU and national policy measures

Rural energy infrastructure often lags behind that in urban areas. As studies show, the energy mix in rural communities tends to rely more heavily on coal and oil and is often less energy efficient than in cities and towns. This project prepares an inventory of rural and urban-rural energy projects and based thereon develops recommendations for new and additional policy measures at EU and Member States levels to promote effective and efficient energy investments in rural areas. The International Carbon Action Partnership (ICAP) successfully convened another ICAP training course on Emissions Trading for Emerging Economies and Developing Countries to build capacity in emissions trading systems (ETS). The ICAP Training Course 2012 took place in Alajuela (Costa Rica) from 19 to 28 March 2012. Benjamin Görlach and Michael Mehling of Ecologic Institute led the course and spoke about ways to avoid carbon leakage and competitive distortions as well as the impact of policies on the design of ETS. Third I-CITE Study Tour: Transformation of the Energy Economy

Europe is increasingly shifting toward renewable energy. Germany is transitioning away from nuclear power to renewable sources, and Denmark recently committed to achieving 35% green energy by 2020 and 100% renewable energy by 2050. To witness these changes take shape, a study tour was organized on the Transformation of the Energy Economy: Natural Gas, Renewable Energy, Smart Grids and Electric Mobility. The New Zealand Emissions Trading Scheme and the Role of the Forestry Sector - Study Tour

From 11 to 16 March 2012 Ecologic Institute and Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) hosted a one-week study tour in New Zealand for European foresters and forest policy experts to inform them about the integration of the forestry sector into its national emissions trading scheme. Traveling the length of New Zealand's north island, the participants met with forest landowners and managers (including from the indigenous Maori tribes), carbon trading experts, forestry policy think tanks, and regional and national policymakers to gain a well-rounded perspective of how the current policies were developed, how they are being monitored and implemented, and which actors are benefiting from them. The Forum is a collaboration of the US State Department, the government of Washington, DC, and the foreign embassies in the city; the intention of the forum is for the embassies and the city to share best practices and to work together to make the city greener and more sustainable. Welcome to the Transatlantic Program at Ecologic Institute.

Ecologic Institute's Transatlantic Program strengthens transatlantic relations in the field of environmental policy, as well as in the integration of environmental concerns into other areas of policy, such as foreign relations and trade. Since 2001, the program has focused on transatlantic relations both between individual countries and among the European Union, Canada, Latin America, the Caribbean and the United States. Second I-CITE Study Tour: The Sustainable Transformation of Industrial Cities

As part of the I-CITE and ELEEP initiatives, Ecologic Institute and the Atlantic Council of the United States led a transatlantic contingent on a study tour of Detroit and Pittsburgh from 8 to 12 January 2012. The study tour is the second of three held as part of the I-CITE project funded by the European Union; its focus was the transformation of declining industrial regions and opportunities for their sustainable recovery. The tour builds from previous tours organized by Ecologic Institute, specifically the Transatlantic Media Dialogue to the Ruhr Valley in late 2010. This tour also marks the first face-to-face meeting of the ELEEP network; six of the ten participants, three each from the EU and the US, attended. Read more ...

Ecologic Institute again ranks 6th among Environment Think Tanks in the prestigious 2011 Global "Go-To Think Tank Index" of the University of Pennsylvania. Ecologic Institute - based in Berlin, Germany, and Washington DC - also reached 6th place in this category in the previous year's ranking. Among the Top 50 Think Tanks in Western Europe, Ecologic Institute took 37th place and was the only environmental think tank in this category.
