Ecologic Newsletter No 100 - April 2011

Ecologic Institute

Dear Friend of Ecologic Institute,

Today, we are sending you our 100th newsletter. Our monthly email newsletter tells you about Ecologic Institute’s activities, including new publications, results of our research projects, forthcoming events, and general news. This newsletter features milestones of our development, among them the celebration of the third anniversary of Ecologic Institute, Washington DC, and the tenth anniversary of Ecologic Institute, Brussels. Ecologic Institute, Washington DC is a legally, financially and operationally independent organisation from its Berlin counterpart but follows the same philosophy and aims for the same overall objective. Our goal is to contribute to a sustainable and equitable future society. We are therefore dedicated to bringing fresh ideas to environmental policies and sustainable development. Our work program focuses on obtaining practical results and covers the entire spectrum of environmental issues, including the integration of environmental concerns into other policy fields. This includes promoting international dialogue and cooperation for a peaceful global society. In addition to strengthening and building upon our existing projects, we are moving forward with new ventures and initiatives. We are excited by the possibilities that lie ahead for us!
Yours, R. Andreas Kraemer Director, Ecologic Institute, Berlin Chairman, Ecologic Institute, Washington DC

  1. Research brings change

The support of scientific research and technological development are key objectives of the EU. Indeed, the goal of the Lisbon Strategy is to become the "most competitive and dynamic knowledge-based economy in the world". Ecologic Institute contributes to this goal through a range of research projects, especially under the Seventh Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development (FP7) . Themes and focal points of the projects span from climate change to sustainable mountain development, from freshwater biodiversity to the integration of mainstream economic indicators with sustainable development objectives.

  2. Ecologic Institute, Brussels: Ten years at the forefront of European environmental policy

Since 1995, Ecologic Institute contributed to the strategic development of European environmental policy through large-scale international collaborations and framework agreements with EU Institutions. With our key partner, the Institute for European Environmental Policy (IEEP) and our presence in strategic locations, we work to overcome political obstacles and strengthen relations with EU institutions. The opening of the Brussels office ten years ago paved the way for an even stronger role of Ecologic Institute at the European level. Ecologic Institute is delighted to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Brussels office in September, together with our sponsors, partners and colleagues.

  3. Ecologic Institute, Washington DC: Three years and going strong

Three years after its launch on Earth Day 2008, Ecologic Institute in Washington DC has established a strong presence in the North American environmental policy scene. But, since perceptions and priorities on both sides of the Atlantic are once again beginning to diverge, there is a great deal of important work that lies ahead for the Institute and its transatlantic mission.

  4. Ecologic Institute Transatlantic Program: Ten years of international exchange

Enhancing mutual understanding of how environmental policy issues are framed, discussed, and handled in the international arena is an important goal of the Transatlantic Program. Since the beginning of Ecologic Institute’s Transatlantic Program, more than 50 young people interested in environmental policy have come to Berlin to participate in Ecologic Institute’s international environmental research and consulting program. Both the number of researchers coming to Berlin as well as the range of countries of origin continues to grow: Today, the Transatlantic Program hosts at least five junior researchers each year from countries ranging from the US and Canada to Mexico and Guatemala. In addition to supporting research exchange, the Transatlantic Program also provides a platform for regular dialogue among Berlin’s transatlantic community and guest experts and covers a wide range of issue areas.

  5. What others are saying about Ecologic Institute

Ecologic Institute’s cooperation with experts from various organisations and research institutions has contributed to the institute’s reputation for excellence in transdisciplinary and policy-relevant research. Over the past years sponsors, partners and colleagues have joined the work of Ecologic Institute in many ways, drawing on its expertise and encouraging it to taking up new challenges but also acknowledging its contribution to the improvement of environmental policies and sustainable development
