UNDP Practice Note on Environmental Mainstreaming

The implementation of policies to mainstream environmental issues into international organisations and their activities represents an important part of the sustainable development agenda. To this end, Ecologic supports the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in preparing a UNDP Practice Note on Mainstreaming Environment.

Since 1999, UNDP has worked to make environmental management a consideration in all its activities. The process began with an initial framework for action in 2000, and work from 2001 to 2003 focused on developing a UNDP corporate policy for environmental mainstreaming that included an action plan, a system for monitoring and assessing progress under each component of the action plan and the selection of pilot initiatives. As another step in this process, UNDP is currently working towards an agency-wide, comprehensive initiative to consider environmental issues in all UNDP policies, programmes and operations. Ecologic previously assisted in drafting the UNDP Strategy on Environmental Mainstreaming and then helped in the establishment of a UNDP Practice Note on Mainstreaming Environment as a communication tool.
